Transport for London selects Indra to modernize the city’s tunnel traffic control center

MADRID, September 18, 2024 — Transport for London (TfL) has awarded Indra a major contract to modernize and integrate the control and management systems of the capital’s 12 road tunnels and approximately 90 kilometers of connecting roadways. The project will introduce a state-of-the-art control center, powered by Indra’s Horus intelligent traffic and tunnel management platform, to improve safety, efficiency and incident response across London’s critical underground transport network.

Under the contract, Indra will design, implement and maintain a new London Street Tunnels Operations Control Center (LSTOC), which will centralize operations previously managed through multiple, independent systems. The new Horus-based system will unify real-time monitoring and control functions across the network, ensuring safe and seamless operations during both routine and emergency situations.

The contract represents an important milestone for Indra in the United Kingdom and further strengthens the company’s global leadership in intelligent mobility and infrastructure management. Through this project, Indra will help TfL optimize tunnel operations and enhance safety for millions of daily commuters.

Indra’s Horus solution offers a flexible, open architecture capable of integrating a wide range of subsystems, from lighting and ventilation to traffic monitoring and emergency response, within a single interface. Operators will benefit from real-time automation and incident management tools, helping them make faster, data-driven decisions. The system also includes built-in redundancy through a secondary control center and dual data hubs, ensuring high reliability and security.

This modernization will allow tunnel operators, traffic authorities, emergency services and maintenance teams to share real-time data and improve coordination citywide. By collecting and analyzing current and historical traffic information, the system will support data-driven decision-making for future mobility planning.

The London project reinforces Indra’s position as a global leader in traffic, tunnel and mobility management technology, with active projects in more than 50 countries, including Spain, Ireland, Chile, Brazil, India, China and the United States. Indra’s tunnel control systems have earned top ratings in EuroTAP safety tests since 2004.

In the United Kingdom and Ireland, Indra continues to expand its presence through projects with NATS, the Port of Southampton, and major motorway and tunnel systems in Ireland, including the Dublin Port Tunnel. The company also provides advanced technology to financial and telecommunications sectors and has played a key role in several high-profile public infrastructure programs across the region.
