Indra wins IBTTA Toll Excellence Award for Innovation in U.S. express lane technology

MADRID, September 9, 2024 — Indra has been honored with the IBTTA Toll Excellence Award in the Private Sector Innovation category by the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA). The award recognizes Indra’s groundbreaking all-overhead open road tolling system deployed on the 66 Express Outside the Beltway in Virginia, one of the nation’s most advanced express lane projects.
The winning solution eliminates the need for traditional in-pavement sensors, using a fully overhead architecture that integrates LiDAR technology, AI-powered video analytics, and automatic High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) detection. This combination enables seamless, high-accuracy toll collection while reducing maintenance costs and environmental impact.
The IBTTA award highlights how Indra’s technology has enhanced traffic flow and driver experience on one of Virginia’s busiest highways, and at the same time established a new benchmark for tolling innovation and mobility efficiency.
“For years, we’ve been applying our most advanced technologies in U.S. mobility projects, from dynamic free-flow tolling to connected vehicle systems,” said Raúl Ripio, General Director of Mobility & Technology at Indra. “This award recognizes how our intelligent transportation solutions are improving mobility, safety and sustainability in communities across the United States.”
Indra’s tolling technology on the 66 Express Outside the Beltway delivers scalability and flexibility, allowing operators to adapt quickly to changes in business rules or vehicle classification. Its open-architecture design, built with commercial off-the-shelf components, also lays the groundwork for future connected and autonomous vehicle integration.
Building on this success, Indra is currently deploying its dynamically priced, all-overhead tolling system with 3D LiDAR and AI along the I-485 express lanes in Charlotte, North Carolina, and previously installed automatic HOV detection systems on the I-95, I-495, and I-395 express lanes in northern Virginia.
Beyond the United States, Indra is a trusted technology partner for tolling and intelligent transport systems in markets such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, the Philippines, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Portugal, and Spain.
