Indra to equip U.S. airports with advanced surface surveillance and monitoring technology

MADRID, July 8, 2024 — Global technology and consulting firm Indra has been approved by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for Indra’s Surface Awareness Initiative (SAI) technology, enabling its deployment at any of the nation’s 450 staffed air traffic control tower airports to enhance runway safety and operational awareness.

Indra’s SAI solution, known commercially as AeroBOSS, has been added to the FAA’s Qualified Product List (QPL), paving the way for implementation at airports across the United States. The technology uses ADS-B surveillance, satellite communications, and 5G connectivity to deliver precise aircraft position data to controllers in real time. The result is faster deployment, improved safety and more efficient surface operations.

The first installation of Indra’s SAI system has been successfully completed at Dallas Love Field Airport in Texas. The system provides controllers with a comprehensive, real-time view of aircraft on taxiways and runways, helping to prevent surface incidents and improve situational awareness.

Indra’s SAI technology is available to more than 250 FAA-operated air traffic control towers and an additional 200 airports under the Federal Contract Tower Program. Designed for rapid deployment via a secure cloud platform, the system integrates seamlessly into existing airport infrastructure to provide scalable, cost-effective safety improvements.

The company has also renewed its exclusive contract with the FAA to supply Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) systems that help guide aircraft during approach and en-route navigation. More than 250 sets of DME equipment have been delivered thus far.

With this agreement, Indra reinforces its leadership in aviation innovation and its commitment to safe, efficient and sustainable air traffic management in the U.S. market. The company also provides air navigation systems to the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy, further strengthening its footprint in the American aerospace sector.

Indra’s technology supports more than 11,000 air traffic facilities worldwide and helps ensure the safety of 85% of the world’s daily air passengers, making it one of the foremost global providers of next-generation air traffic solutions.
