Indra brings Connected Vehicle Tolling to North Carolina’s I-485 express lanes — the first highway in the U.S. to deploy this technology

MADRID, August 29, 2025 — Indra will introduce its Connected Vehicle Tolling (C-V2X Toll) solution on the I-485 Express Lanes in North Carolina, making it the first highway in the United States to deploy C-V2X tolling technology within roadside infrastructure and central host systems. The initiative marks a major step toward a new era of connected mobility, where tolling and safety information are seamlessly delivered directly to vehicles.
Selected by the North Carolina Turnpike Authority, Indra will implement this next generation of tolling, enabling vehicles equipped with V2X technology to receive real-time toll data through their in-vehicle displays—without mobile apps, transponders, or separate payment devices.
The system was previously successfully demonstrated at Florida’s SunTrax Test Facility during the OmniAir PlugFest, where Indra collaborated with Audi of America and Qualcomm Technologies to showcase the technology’s interoperability and user experience. The tests proved how connected vehicles can streamline toll operations, reduce congestion and improve driver convenience through standardized digital payments.
Indra’s C-V2X toll solution is designed to overcome the challenge of limited interoperability among regional tolling systems in the U.S. By providing a nationwide, standards-based framework, it enables toll agencies to communicate directly with vehicles and deliver uniform experiences to drivers traveling across multiple jurisdictions.
In addition to revolutionizing toll collection, the project will leverage Indra’s 3D LiDAR-based detection systems—already installed as part of the I-485 tolling network—to identify real-time safety events such as wrong-way driving, stopped vehicles, pedestrians, or slow-moving traffic. Detected events will be broadcast instantly to nearby vehicles via C-V2X, enhancing roadway awareness and reducing response times.
“This project underscores how collaboration and innovation can reshape the future of mobility,” said Raúl Ripio, Senior Vice President of Mobility & Technology at Indra. “We’re proud to work alongside the North Carolina Turnpike Authority to deliver technology that improves both the driver experience and roadway safety.”
Indra has also deployed its all-overhead open road tolling system on the I-485 Express Lanes, comprising ten gantries that enable automated payments at highway speeds. The fully gantry-mounted configuration eliminates pavement-embedded sensors, minimizing maintenance needs and environmental impact while promoting smoother, safer traffic flow.
Indra is showcasing its C-V2X Toll and Safety innovations at the ITS World Congress in Atlanta, Georgia, highlighting how connected vehicle infrastructure can advance sustainable, efficient, and interoperable transportation nationwide.
With a growing presence in the U.S. market, Indra continues to transform highway mobility across the U.S. with projects such as I-66 Outside the Beltway, which is equipped with overhead open road tolling, high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) detection, LiDAR and connected vehicle technologies. Indra has also deployed HOV systems on the I-95, I-495, and I-395 Express Lanes in Virginia.
