Indra awarded contract to modernize air-ground communications network across the U.S.

MADRID, November 6, 2024 — The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has selected Indra to modernize the nation’s air-ground communications network, replacing legacy analog radio systems with next-generation digital radio equipment capable of both analog and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) operations.

The competitively awarded contract, which is valued at up to $244.3 million if all options are exercised by the FAA, calls for Indra to manufacture, test and qualify as many as 46,000 new radios, along with support and maintenance services for up to 10 years. The upgrade will significantly strengthen the safety, efficiency and resiliency of air traffic communications between pilots and air traffic controllers across the United States.

The radios will be manufactured at Indra’s U.S. facility in Overland Park, Kansas, where production of its Park Air radio technology will be localized for the American market. The new systems feature secure IP connectivity for real-time voice and data transmission, which ensures reliable communications for the FAA’s vast air traffic management (ATM) network.

“This award represents a major milestone in our U.S. growth strategy and a core element of our Leading the Future plan to expand Indra’s global leadership in air traffic management,” said Javier Ruano, Director of ATM at Indra. “It reflects the strong collaboration between our U.S. subsidiary and our Park Air Center of Excellence in the United Kingdom, a recognized leader in advanced communications technology, now with a new production base in Kansas.”

The contract further strengthens Indra’s partnership with the FAA, which recently approved the company’s Surface Awareness Initiative (SAI) technology for the surveillance and monitoring of surface aircraft. The FAA can now deploy this technology at any of the nation’s 450 staffed control tower airports.

In addition to its work with the FAA, Indra also supplies advanced air traffic and navigation solutions to the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy. Globally, the company has equipped more than 11,000 air traffic facilities and supports 85% of daily air passengers worldwide, positioning Indra among the leading providers of next-generation ATM and communications systems.
