Indra, Audi, and Qualcomm collaborate to showcase the future of tolling through Connected Vehicle Technology

MADRID, June 2, 2025 — Indra, Audi of America, and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. have joined forces to demonstrate the next evolution in tolling and in-vehicle payment technology through cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) connectivity. The collaboration, underway for the past two years, highlights a major step toward nationwide interoperability for toll payments and other in-vehicle services.

The companies recently presented the new system during the OmniAir Interoperability Testing event at the SunTrax Test Facility in Florida on May 12, 2025, where they showcased how vehicles equipped with C-V2X technology can communicate directly with roadside infrastructure to streamline toll transactions, improve mobility and reduce congestion.

Based on the SAE J3217 global standard, the new approach enables secure, standardized and precise vehicle-based payments. It has the potential to extend beyond tolling to additional use cases such as parking, road usage fees and drive-through transactions, all handled seamlessly through in-vehicle connectivity.

“We’ve long envisioned a future where vehicles act as secure digital wallets, capable of handling everything from tolls and parking to mobility-based services,” said Raúl Ripio, Senior Vice President of Mobility & Technology at Indra. “The introduction of the J3217 C-V2X standard places the United States at the forefront of connected vehicle innovation, and Indra is proud to be part of that progress.”

Today, tolling systems rely on a mix of transponders, mobile apps and license plate recognition, which can create compatibility challenges across states and tolling authorities. Indra’s C-V2X tolling solution simplifies this process by displaying real-time toll information directly on vehicle dashboards and enabling instant, accurate payments without additional hardware.

For tolling agencies and operators, the technology promises lower operational costs and improved transaction accuracy by minimizing exceptions and reducing roadside infrastructure needs. Using precise vehicle identification and lane-level positioning, C-V2X technology can distinguish connected vehicles from non-connected ones and handle both simultaneously and with high reliability.

The demonstration at SunTrax highlighted the potential for nationwide deployment of this technology, leveraging the combined expertise of Indra, Qualcomm and Audi’s development teams within the Volkswagen Group. The initiative aligns with U.S. efforts to advance connected and automated mobility, reinforcing the country’s leadership in safe, secure and efficient transportation innovation.
