Indra Air Traffic Inc. to modernize U.S. Air Force’s man-portable tactical navigation systems

MADRID, April 28, 2025 — Indra Air Traffic Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of the global technology and defense leader Indra, has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Air Force to renew its Man-Portable Tactical Air Navigation (MP TACAN) systems. The systems are critical equipment that ensures reliable navigation for military aircraft, even in environments where satellite-based signals are denied.

The multi-year agreement, valued at up to $198.36 million and extending through 2032, covers the design, engineering, production, technical maintenance, and potential future upgrades of the portable TACAN units. These compact systems provide accurate, dependable navigation guidance for both military and civil aircraft and are engineered for rapid deployment and operation in austere or contested environments.

Lightweight and transportable by two service members, the MP TACAN plays a vital role in restoring or establishing navigation capabilities at temporary airfields, during disaster recovery missions, and in advanced tactical operations. The systems are designed and built at Indra Air Traffic’s center of excellence in Overland Park, Kansas, which has earned the “Made in Kansas” designation from the state’s Department of Commerce.

“We’re honored that the U.S. Air Force continues to place its trust in Indra’s technology to ensure mission success in the world’s most challenging environments,” said Bill Colligan, CEO of Indra Air Traffic Inc. “Our goal is to deliver efficient, resilient systems that safeguard operational readiness and airspace safety.”

Javier Ruano, Indra’s Director of ATM Development in the U.S., added: “This contract, along with our recent work modernizing the FAA’s ground-to-air communications network, marks another major step forward for Indra. We’re committed to expanding our local footprint and providing solutions that meet the evolving needs of U.S. defense and aviation customers.”

This new contract underscores Indra Air Traffic’s position as a trusted partner to major U.S. aviation and defense institutions, including the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force, and strengthens its role as a provider of cutting-edge air traffic management and navigation technologies that meet the highest quality and reliability standards.
